The Spice It Up Story
In November of the year 2000, Jamaican-born Joy Elaine noticed a disturbing trend in her Scarborough community.
A large number of children in the area had no lunch at school, affecting their ability to focus and succeed academically.
Joy had previous cooking experience from “back home”, especially using the jerk pan method (the Original Jamaican style of preparing jerk). She put all of her savings into creating a safe after school place where students were able to have a hot meal and do their homework.
Thus, Jammie’s was born. A full fledged Jamaican restaurant, next to Harry West Indian Supermarket at Markham and Lawrence. Providing respectful employment for people in the community.
Over the years, Joy’s name became synonymous with the most authentic & tasty Caribbean Meals in Toronto. Even winning the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Jazz Festival for three consecutive years (2004, 2005 & 2006).
In 2012, Joy opened a new restaurant just up the street at Morningside and Lawerence: Spice It Up.
Bringing her decades of experience, Spice It Up has continued to be a place of community, safety and incredible food for residents all across Toronto.
